A VG10 cobalt alloy core clad on both sides with 13-chrome stainless steel, then finished with a black oxide conversion coating. The coating is the same chemistry used on surgical instruments: it converts the blade surface itself rather than sitting on top of it, so it adds corrosion resistance without a coating that can chip or peel. It also gives the blade its smoked matte look.
The handle is chestnut, fire-treated to harden the timber and improve its water resistance, shaped into a traditional D profile with a polypropylene resin ferrule at the join. ZEN BLACK is TOJIRO's answer to wanting the SHIPPU look and feel without the Damascus price. Light in the hand, thin behind the edge, and made in Niigata Japan.
At 70mm this is the smallest blade in the range, made for peeling turning vegetables and detail work held in the hand.
