The Victorinox Story
In 1884, Karl Elsener opened a cutler's workshop in Ibach, in the Swiss canton of Schwyz. Seven years later he delivered the first soldier's knives to the Swiss Army, and in 1897 he perfected the elegant, lightweight "Officer's and Sports Knife" — the original Swiss Army Knife, and still the heart of the company today.
The name came later, and from close to home. When Karl's mother Victoria died in 1909, he named the company in her honour. With the arrival of stainless steel — "inox" in French — the two words joined: Victorinox.
More than 140 years on, the company is still family-owned and still run from Ibach, now in its fourth generation of Elseners. The same factory produces the professional cutlery found in commercial kitchens worldwide, the Swiss Army Knives carried in millions of pockets, and the watches, travel gear and tools that grew from the same uncompromising standard. Every Victorinox product carries a lifetime guarantee against defects in material and workmanship — a promise the Elsener family has kept since the beginning.
Our Take: Thirty Years of Victorinox
We've stocked Victorinox for more than thirty years, and in all that time we can't recall a single bad word about it — not one review, not one returned grudge. We started with the professional Fibrox knives, and they're still going into the kits of the region's chefs and butchers today, many of whom are still using the Victorinox they bought from us decades ago. Our best seller, though, might surprise you: the humble Swiss Classic paring knife — iconic, near-indestructible, and the knife everyone ends up owning three of.
In 2024 we visited the Victorinox factory in Ibach, Switzerland, and it changed how we talk about the brand. It's a magnificently beautiful village, and the whole town is visibly proud of the Elsener family and what they've built. The factory is thoroughly modern yet deeply tied to its roots — genuinely sustainable, with real handcraft still in the process, and staffed by craftspeople whose families have worked there for generations. You can feel it in the place: this is what an authentic family company looks like. In a world of dupes and faceless brands, that matters, and it's why we stand behind Victorinox the way we do.

Are Victorinox knives dishwasher safe?
Victorinox advises hand washing. The stainless blades tolerate a dishwasher, but detergent and heat dull edges and are harsh on handles — especially wood. Wash in warm soapy water, dry, and your knife will outlast the dishwasher.
What warranty do Victorinox products carry, and who do I contact?
A lifetime guarantee against defects in material and workmanship — it doesn't cover normal wear or misuse, but genuine faults are covered for the life of the product. Come to us directly with any claim and we'll handle it for you from start to finish.

What happened to Wenger?
Wenger, the "other" Swiss Army Knife maker, was acquired by Victorinox in 2005, and its knife range folded into Victorinox in 2013. Wenger continues today as its own brand for watches and travel gear — which we also stock.
What are the annual Alox limited editions?
Each year Victorinox releases the Classic SD, Cadet and Pioneer with anodised aluminium (Alox) scales in a new, one-year-only colour. Once a year's colour sells out, it's gone — which is why collectors move quickly.
Fibrox or Swiss Classic — which should I buy?
They share the same blades. Fibrox has the larger, grippier professional handle and is the commercial-kitchen standard; Swiss Classic is slimmer and lighter in the hand, ideal at home. If you cook big volumes, Fibrox; for everyday home use, either will serve you for decades.
Where are Victorinox products made?
The knives and Swiss Army Knives are made in Ibach, Switzerland, where the company has manufactured since 1884. Watches are Swiss made. Travel gear is made to Victorinox's specification and quality standards internationally.
