The hardest part of learning to sharpen on a stone is holding one angle for the length of the stroke. This clips onto the spine of the blade and rides on the stone, so the angle stays where you set it and the bevel comes out even instead of rounded.
The contact point is alumina-base ceramic rather than plastic, so it resists abrasion and holds the angle accurately over far more sharpening sessions than a soft guide would. It attaches to a range of blade sizes.
