Original Duckhead makes one thing, and makes it properly: a London-designed umbrella with a carved birch duck head handle and a canopy spun from recycled plastic bottles. Founded in 2012 by Morgan Cros, the brand exists to fix what's wrong with the umbrella industry — a billion-units-discarded-yearly category nobody else has bothered to redesign.

Our Take on Original Duckhead

What we like: the design is genuinely original, the duck handle does the work of making an everyday object into a kept object, and the sustainability story holds up to scrutiny — B Corp 88.4, 1% for the Planet, rPET canopies, FSC birch, PFAS-free coating. The 2-year warranty is more than you get on most premium umbrellas.

Worth knowing: this is a designed umbrella, not a disposable. If you're someone who routinely leaves umbrellas behind on trains and at restaurant doors, the price will sting. If you keep things and care how they look, it's the umbrella to keep.

Born From a Mother's Umbrella

Morgan Cros founded Original Duckhead in London in 2012, after a cheap New York bodega umbrella collapsed on a windswept Paris evening one December. The replacement, in her mind, looked like the umbrella her mother had owned in their Parisian home — handmade, with an intricately carved duck handle. She set out to revive that design, and to fix what was wrong with the umbrella industry along the way.

The number she kept running into was the one that became the brand's mission: over a billion umbrellas are discarded globally each year, and almost none of them are recyclable. Original Duckhead's response was to make an umbrella designed to be kept rather than replaced. Each canopy is spun from nine post-consumer plastic bottles. Each handle is carved from FSC-certified birch wood. The waterproof coating is PFAS-free, the steel frame is wind-resistant, the packaging is biodegradable.

Today the brand is a Certified B Corporation with an impact score of 88.4 — well above the 50.9 median — and a 1% for the Planet member. It still makes one thing properly: an umbrella built around the same carved duck handle that Morgan first saw in her mother's hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "9 recycled bottles per canopy" actually mean?

Each umbrella canopy is woven from rPET — recycled polyester made from nine post-consumer plastic bottles diverted from landfill or the ocean. The recycled-content claim is independently verified (SCS-certified).

Are the duck handles really wood?

Yes — every handle is carved from FSC-certified birch wood, sustainably sourced. Each one is slightly different because they're carved from real timber, not moulded plastic pretending to be wood.

What's "PFAS-free" and why does it matter?

PFAS are synthetic "forever chemicals" used widely in waterproof coatings. They don't break down in the environment, accumulate in soil and waterways, and are being phased out by regulators globally. Original Duckhead's Daily range uses a PFAS-free waterproof coating that performs to the same standard without the persistence problem.

Are these umbrellas wind-resistant?

The high-strength steel frame is built to snap back to shape if the canopy inverts in a gust. That said, no umbrella is fully storm-proof — turn it into the wind, don't hold it up against gale-force conditions, and use the wrist strap.

Is there a warranty?

Original Duckhead offers a 2-year manufacturer's warranty on the umbrella mechanism and frame. Australian consumer guarantees apply as standard on top.
