Maxwell & Williams designs tableware for people who set a table often and expect it to last. Ranges are built to be bought in pieces and extended over years, so a service started with four settings grows to twelve without a compromise on match.

Why we stock it

We have sold Maxwell & Williams across the counter and into commercial kitchens for years, and the reason is unglamorous: it comes back.

Customers return for the second dinner set, the replacement plate, the matching platter they did not buy the first time. Ranges stay in production long enough for that to be possible, which is rarer in tableware than it should be. When a cafe orders forty side plates and comes back eighteen months later for forty more, they get the same plate.

The white ranges are the workhorses. The artist collaborations are where it gets interesting, and they are the pieces people actually give as gifts.

A tablecloth in Florence

The name was written on a butcher's paper tablecloth in Florence in 1996, over a few bottles of chianti, by a man trying to think of what to call a homewares brand. Max Grundmann wrote his own first name beside that of his business partner, the late Bill Ryan. That piece of paper is framed in the company's offices.

The foundations were laid a generation earlier. Harry and Anna Grundmann arrived in Australia from post-war Europe and started a homewares business out of the garage of their Brighton East home in 1963. Max is their son. The business is now in its third generation, with Daniel Grundmann leading sales and product and Michael Grundmann heading strategy and operations.

The first real breakthrough was not a plate but a sticker. Maxwell & Williams put a label on the front of their white plates instead of the back, so the brand was visible on a shelf crowded with anonymous white china. The range it launched was White Basics.

In 2025 the family added Love Anna x, named for Anna Grundmann. Her name is on the packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Maxwell & Williams made in Australia?

The brand is Australian owned and Australian designed. Manufacturing is offshore, which is what allows fine bone china and reactive-glaze porcelain to sit at the prices they do.

Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?

Most of the porcelain and bone china is both. It varies by piece, so the care symbols are listed on every product page rather than claimed across the brand.

What is the difference between porcelain and bone china here?

Bone china, used in Cashmere and Kimono, is thinner, lighter and more translucent. Porcelain is heavier and more robust. Both go in the dishwasher.

Does it stand up to commercial use?

Maxwell & Williams has supplied Australian hospitality since 2002. The white porcelain ranges are the ones specified for service.
