Lékué makes flexible cookware that does the job of several rigid ones. Steam cases cook fish and vegetables in a microwave in minutes. Bread makers proof and bake a loaf in one mould, no tin and no tray. Cake moulds, muffin cups, macaron mats and baking sheets turn out clean without greasing or lining. Stretch lids seal any bowl, jar or half-cut melon and retire the cling film drawer. Ice trays, oil dispensers and air fryer liners fill in the rest of a range that folds flat, survives the dishwasher and does not warp.

EU's Take

Our Take on Lékué

We stock Lékué because the material genuinely does what it claims. A silicone mould that has been in the freezer, then the oven, then the dishwasher, three hundred times, still looks like a mould. Cheap silicone goes chalky, holds smells and eventually weeps oil. This does not, and that difference is the whole reason the brand can put a ten-year guarantee behind it.

The honest caveat: silicone bakeware is floppy, and if you are used to a rigid tin you will hate it for the first two bakes. A cake mould full of batter needs to go onto a tray before it goes into the oven, or you will wear it. Once you have adjusted, the trade is worth it, because nothing sticks and nothing needs lining. But we would rather tell you that now than have you find out on a birthday cake.

An Argument With an Ice Tray

In a Barcelona bar in the late 1970s, a waiter was beating a metal ice tray against the counter. He was trying to free a single cube and the tray would not give it up. The noise carried across the room. José María Llorente was sitting on the other side of the bar, watching, and the thought that arrived was not complicated: why is this thing rigid? Why is a container that has to release its contents made of something that grips them?

He founded Lékué in 1980, outside Barcelona, and the first product was an ice tray you could bend. That is the whole of the beginning. Every steam case, bread mould and cake tin the company has made since descends from one man deciding that a hard object should be soft.

For its first twenty-five years the company made product for other people's brands. That changed in 2005, when new management arrived and brought in four designers supervised by Luki Huber, who had spent years working alongside Ferran Adrià at elBulli. This is the part of the story that explains the products. Lékué did not come out of a housewares boardroom. It came out of the same Catalan kitchen culture that rebuilt modern cooking from first principles, and it asks the same kind of question: not how do we improve the cake tin, but why is the cake tin shaped like that at all.

The answer they landed on was platinum silicone, cured with platinum as the catalyst rather than the cheaper peroxide most manufacturers use. It costs more. It also does not soften in the oven, does not crack at minus sixty, does not leach into food and does not take on the smell of what you cooked last time. Nearly two hundred products have been built on that material, and the company backs them for ten years.

In 2021 Lékué was bought by Brabantia, the Dutch group whose bins and storage have been in Australian kitchens for decades. The Barcelona office kept the design and innovation work, and the products still come out of the same workshops, run the same way, chasing the same question the waiter asked without meaning to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lékué silicone safe at high heat?

Yes. It's platinum-cured silicone, rated from -60°C to 220°C. It won't soften, leach or take on the smell of what you cooked last time. BPA-free.

Do I need to grease or line the moulds?

No. Silicone releases on its own, and greasing actually makes release harder. Place the mould on a baking tray before you fill it, then move the tray, since silicone is flexible when loaded.

Does silicone brown as well as a metal tin?

Not quite. Silicone conducts less heat, so bases and sides come out paler. It's ideal for muffins, loaves and set desserts, and the quiche mould is micro-perforated so pastry still crisps underneath.

Can I cook raw food in a microwave steam case?

Yes. Fish takes around four minutes, vegetables three, chicken six to seven. The perforated tray keeps food above the liquid that drains out, so nothing stews.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Almost all of the range is, and it's noted on the individual product page where it isn't. Use the top rack. If silicone ever feels tacky after something rich, bake it empty at 180°C for ten minutes.

What does the 10-year guarantee cover?

Manufacturing defects, on domestic use. It doesn't extend to commercial kitchens, so trade customers should treat these as domestic products.
